Eheliyagoda Sri Sumana Piriven Vidyayathanaya is a prestigious educational institution with a proud history spanning over half a century. Established on January 15, 1948, it emerged as a result of the Buddhist revival during the British colonial era.
Historical Significance
The institution traces its roots back to the Second World War period. Due to logistical challenges in providing alms to monks at the Mudduwa Pirivena in Ratnapura, a single class was relocated to the Bugahapitiya Temple in Eheliyagoda. As the student population grew, it evolved into an independent institution, retaining the name "Sri Sumana" to honor its origins.
Modern Era
From humble beginnings with just 5 teachers and 25 students, the institution was elevated to a "Vidyayathanaya Pirivena" status on January 1, 2004. Under the visionary leadership of eminent prelates like Ven. Mabodale Dhammaloka Thero and Ven. Henpitagedara Gnanasiha Thero has transformed it into a leading center for spiritual and academic excellence in the region.
